Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration dedicated to the remembrance of the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua (Sept. 15, 1821), Mexico (Sept. 16, 1810), and Chile (Sept. 18, 1810). Started in 1968 as a week-long celebration focused on specific Latin American countries in North America, it has expanded to a month-long recognition that also highlights the historical and cultural impacts of the nation's Hispanic community across diverse sectors.

Both new and experienced educators are expected to understand their students’ disabilities and provide appropriate accommodations. That’s why new teachers in the Rutgers Alternate Route program dedicate time to studying research-based practices and resources that help students with disabilities succeed.

Cultural competence in schools refers to the ability of educational institutions and their staff to interact effectively with students, parents, and communities from diverse cultural backgrounds.

After teaching the lesson, candidates write a reflection on the planning and instructional processes, evaluating what it was like to transform a lesson plan from conception into classroom practice. This requirement is essential because it gives candidates valuable hands-on experience developing and delivering engaging instruction while also fostering the professional practice of reflecting on their teaching for continuous growth.

As simple as it may be to dismiss how important it is to truly know our students, it is becoming more evident that students today may not engage with us or the knowledge we wish to share if they are not connected to us as educators in some way or until we learn to adjust to each student’s personal story as well as the manner in which they learn.
