Rutgers Alternate Route program

Thank you for your interest in the Rutgers Alternate Route program! 

To ensure a smooth application process, please review the following completely. A complete application consists of the following:

(1) Documentation identifying your current Certificate of Eligibility (CE) status.

a. CE-holder: copy of your CE details

b. Limited CE-holder: copy of your CE details AND proof of employment from an approved district

c. Non-CE: application pending; confirm requirements have been met here before proceeding

(2) Documentation of degree completionA minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required from an accredited college or university.

a. Upload an unofficial copy of your transcript(s) that shows your completed coursework, and your graduation details including cumulative GPA, major, date of conferment of your bachelor’s degree.

b. Degrees issued outside of the US require a transcript evaluation. Unofficial evaluations are accepted.

(3) Documentation of completion of the testing requirements for certification in New Jersey at the time you applied for your CE. Review the NJ Department of Education’s testing requirements webpage hereIf applicable, this includes:

a. Praxis Subject Tests

b. Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), Written Proficiency Test (WPT)

c. Basic Skills Assessment

(4) Documentation of any previously completed alternate route courses. If applicable, this includes a 50-hour Pre-Service Verification Program Completion Certificate. 

If one of the documents above is unavailable, upload a Word document with an explanation.

There is an opportunity to add additional documents to the end of your application if needed.

After reviewing the program application requirements, gather the necessary documents. Please label the documents with your first and last name and identifying type (i.e. Jane Smith transcript; Jane Smith Praxis, etc). Now you are ready to complete our application. Apply Now!

After applying, applicants will be notified of a decision via email from altroute@gse.rutgers.edu within ten business days.

Applicants who have been accepted into the program will receive instructions on registering for courses. Applicants who have not been accepted into the program may be asked for more information.

Please allow up to an additional ten days for a response when you provide additional information. Multiple responses will push your email further back in the queue. To avoid delays, questions not directly related to your application should be sent to altroute@gse.rutgers.edu in a separate email, which will have a response time of 1-2 business days.
