61 Peer-Recommended Resources for Science Teachers

Group of science students around an experiment with their teacher overlooking

New Jersey Alternate Route candidates specializing in Science Education recently recommended free web resources that they’ve consulted when preparing lessons and engaging, relevant activities for students. Their suggested resources are a part of our blog series featuring go-to-websites, blogs, and other online teaching and reference materials for helping our state’s youth achieve the NJ Student Learning Standards. More than 300 teachers participated in this professional swap and share, with many contributing lesser-known resources that even seasoned educators will be excited to discover.  Read why our science educators love the resources they recommend.

Albert.io

-Nicholas M., Grades 6-8

"I just recently used this website to show the students what free fall is and demonstrate acceleration. Although it was nice to have them start the lab in real life and see that the acceleration comes out less than 9.8 with air molecules, it was also nice to show them what would happen if there were no air molecules and the Free Fall Lab on Gizmos allowed me to do so. Gizmos also has lab activities you can use with worksheets if you would like to give those to the students."

Biointeractive is one of my favorite biology resources. Their activities encourage students to figure out something, engaging higher order thinking. While some activities on this site take some prep from the teacher, overall Biointeractive offers USABLE, RELEVANT, and ENGAGING labs and digital explorations. The labs they designed are fleshed out with attached background information, leveled and open ended questions, and easy to use digital interactives.

The resource I chose to review was Biointeractive. It is a website that contains resources for both teacher and student. Biointeractive's relevance is a 4, as it has a strong focus on resources for many different units of science. The customization is a 4 as well due to the variety of activities per subject/unit. This gives many options for students of all levels and all capabilities. Biointeractive scores a 3 in feedback, usability, and engagement as the format is somewhat difficult to navigate for students. It is not super intuitive or easy to look at at the initial onset which can turn students away. Once they give it a chance however, I feel that they will see its usefulness as a resource. For teachers it is wonderful to have so many options in terms of activities/projects/assignments for all different units.

Pivot interactive has a strong connection between lab experiments and the student. There is a comprehensive video library that use real experiments and actual data. Students collect and record experimental results in accordance to an established standard data recording protocol, analysis, interpretation, reporting and making conclusions. Students can plot graphs, and make claims, look at evidence and connect with reasoning by writing responses to questions. In the properties of water experiment, students make sense on how hydrogen bonding make water have unique properties. This concept is important for the students because there is need to relate water with its properties.

I have used the PhEt simulations, and found them to be useful for modeling concepts in biology that are hard to visualize. While I think their true benefit comes in Physics or Chemistry, the site does include useful models and simulations for Biology as well. Using this to model molecule polarity and neurons and color vision were useful; students can see immediate feedback about their inputs, and draw conclusions from this data and establish a causal relationship. However, for ecology simulations, I think that Gizmo had done the job a bit better. I am still looking for a more meaningful simulation for students to learn about Mitosis and Cell Division, and feel that most sites do not handle DNA simulations particularly well.
